On a boating trip in 1862, a 10-year-old Alice Liddell, who was a family friend to Lewis Carroll asked to entertain her with a story. He regaled Alice with fantastic stories of a girl, also named Alice, and her adventures after she fell into a rabbit-hole. The story would go on to be published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The grave of Alice Hargreaves can be found just down the road, in the graveyard of the church of St Michael and All Angels, in Lyndhurst.
